300

300Writer/Artist: Frank Miller

Artist: Lynn Varley (Colourist)

Publisher: Vertigo (DC)

Synopsis: Among the ancient peoples, there was one nation renowned among all as the greatest, toughest, most unstoppable warriors in existance. These were the Spartans. Now, during the Greco-Persian wars, a mere 300 warriors are all that stands between Greece and the uncountable hordes of King Xerxes' Persian army. Which the Spartans probably consider about even odds...

How Is It?: Frank Miller's best work is this retelling of the classic battle of Thermopylae, which is widely considered one of the most astonishing acts of bravery in history. Of course, there are certain myths that have grown up (for instance, the 300 had their various servants and spear-carriers fighting alongside them, so the number of Spartans was quite a bit more than 300). Still, there's no denying that the Spartans were tough buggers, and that it was a pivotal moment in history. Miller gives it a larger-than-life treatment that's tremendously exciting, and his nifty designs are extremely imaginative (Xerxes' big entrance is a wowser). The lush colours and shadows make the art tremendously evocative and will make you want to read it over and over again. Dubious as a history lesson, but unquestionably a fun read.
